Thanks to superb planning, this month saw International Women’s Day fall on Tuesday 8th March, creating the perfect atmosphere for a football tournament at The Forest Sports Zone.

 As Tuesdays are usually Girls Only Nights, the women involved inevitably succeeded in reclaiming the pitch in an entertaining evening full of football.

 With twelve teams put into the hat for the tournament, there was clearly more than just pride at stake.

 

 The challenge to come out on top attracted interest from various age groups and abilities, meaning that the draw was separated out into two competitions: the Novice League and Senior League.

 At the end of a hard-fought contest that would have had Boudicca cheering from her grave, two victors emerged in the shape of Reelbak in the Novice League and Rise Park Ladies in the Senior League.

 Both teams will doubtless remember this chilly March evening fondly for years to come, safe in the knowledge that the pitch belongs to them, whether it’s International Women’s Day or any other day of the year.
