What’s the challenge with getting more people involved in a sport that divides the world?
The European Championships this summer have been a chastening experience for those of us with English heritage, forcing even the most die-hard of fans to hide behind the sofa in embarrassment.
Moments such as the defeat to Iceland can lead us lovers of football to question the very nature of our support with a team that resembles only the weakest parts of our great nation.
But to some, the entire debacle has passed by in a month of other goings-on and arguably more important sporting events.
We at the City of Football would never advocate the absence of love for any sport; mainly, we just hope that as many people as possible are getting the exercise they need in whatever way possible.
However, it is surely proper for us to promote, above all others, the sport that has brought us so much joy over a life-long affair with goalposts, corner flags and shin-pads.
It’s not only about those enjoyable evenings we’ve spent in front of the TV or even out in a stadium cheering on our team, rather, it is the gratification we feel from actually getting out there and playing.
Football is not easy game. And regardless of what people think, it is not a game for cowards or prima donnas. The more courage you have in a game of football the more you will be rewarded.
We want more of you to start playing if you haven’t already. Especially those who say that it is not a sport for them. Football is for everyone, and we want to give everyone a chance to play.
You never know, you just might like it.
