Footie for Over-55s

22 February 2016

Football’s not just a young person’s game...

A lot of us are used to thinking of footie as a young person’s game. If the word football has you imagining youths tearing up and down a pitch, getting some serious grass stains from risky slide tackles, it’s not hard to see how you might come to that conclusion.

We’re told that it’s important to keep active as we get older, but with a vision of no-holds-barred, fast-paced football in mind, it’s not hard to see why footie isn’t the typical choice of exercise for over-55s.

It doesn’t have to be that way. If you’ve a hankering to get back on the pitch, or if you’ve never played before and fancy getting stuck in to something a bit different, we’ve got the perfect solution.

NottsFA organise regular walking football sessions in Nottingham. You won’t need to risk your knees trying to keep up with young’uns – all players take it easy and go at the same pace. Walking football is designed to help people keep an active lifestyle as they get older, as well help people get back on the pitch if they’ve had to stop playing due to injuries.

Loads of studies have shown that regular exercise can help your energy levels and reduce symptoms of illness and pain. Exercise is good for your body, but it’s also good for your mind and your mood, boosting endorphins and relieving stress.

Biology aside, a friendly game of football where everyone plays at the same pace can be a great way to build friendships with like-minded players.

We might be biased, but we’d say that a walking football session is just what the doctor ordered.
